China Zun is the flagship building of Beijing’s comprehensively planned 30-hectare central business district core. Its gently rising and curving form embodies the historic capital’s gracefulness, and resembles an ancient Chinese ceremonial vessel, called the zun. The articulation techniques of the zun is distilled and applied throughout the design of the tower form, envelope, canopy, entrance portals, ground floor lobby, and observation hall interiors.
Key sustainability design components include a high-performance building envelope with triple glazing for office vision areas (the first such application for a building over 500 meters tall), energy-efficient mechanical equipment, use of local materials, and application of greywater toilet systems.
An intelligent self-climbing steel construction platform with a bearing capacity of 4,800 metric tons and 1,849 square meters of area, the largest known in the world for commercial building construction, was critical to the speed of construction. A self-climbing elevator system, with a speed of 4 meters/second, and with a lifting height of 514 meters, was also employed during construction.
